Easter Island’s Alien Gods? Insights into Rongorongo Tablets Using New Tech
Jul 02, 2024Could this new evidence suggest that the ancient inhabitants of Easter Island were visited by extraterrestrial beings?
In my novel translation of the rongorongo script of Easter Island, I have deciphered a translated line reading: “Sky beings descend, bringing wisdom from the waters of life.”
I'm excited to share a modified preview of my in-progress paper, "AI-Assisted Analysis of the Rongorongo Script: A Novel Methodological Approach to Decipherment," which is being prepared for the Archaeologies Journal of the World Archaeological Congress. In this blog post, I reveal some of the key insights and methodologies from my research, providing an accessible look at the innovative use of AI in uncovering the secrets of the rongorongo script. One particularly fascinating discovery hints at the possibility that the Easter Island people might have believed in extraterrestrial gods, with a translated line reading, “Sky beings descend, bringing wisdom from the waters of life.” This paper is not only being submitted for peer review but will also be featured in my upcoming book, The Anunnaki Revelation.
The mysterious rongorongo script, found carved on wooden tablets and other objects from Easter Island, has puzzled scholars since its discovery in the 1800s. There are 26 known rongorongo tablets, though some sources might cite slight variations in this number due to fragments or the inclusion of other objects inscribed with the script. These tablets are considered some of the most important artifacts of the Rapa Nui culture and are held in various museums and collections around the world. The peculiar glyphs on the tablets are etched in rows that snake back and forth across the surface, showcasing an unusual reading pattern called reverse boustrophedon. Though relatively new to the academic world, rongorongo stubbornly remains among the handful of writing systems that continue to defy translation.
The symbols themselves are a curious mix, portraying stylized people, creatures, and abstract shapes that hint at a wealth of hidden knowledge about the secretive Rapa Nui culture. Given that only a small number of rongorongo items have survived to the present day, each ancient tablet could potentially unlock secrets of a long-lost era in human history. These weathered artifacts represent both a frustrating puzzle and an irresistible challenge for researchers. For over a century, these mysterious glyphs have guarded their secrets, resisting every attempt at decipherment. But what if the key to unlocking these ancient secrets lies not in traditional methods, but in modern technology? Could AI be our digital Rosetta Stone? Are we ready for the truths AI might uncover? And more crucially, who controls the narrative these silicon oracles write?
The stakes couldn't be higher. We're not just translating an ancient script—we're potentially rewriting the story of human civilization, and in this high-tech treasure hunt, the prize might be nothing less than the true origins of our species. What if these wooden tablets contain evidence of advanced astronomical knowledge? The line between fringe theory and groundbreaking discovery is often thinner than we'd like to admit.
A Proposed Translation of the Rongorongo Script
Inspired by the potential of AI to uncover hidden patterns, I decided to apply a speculative approach to deciphering rongorongo. In my recent experiments with AI-assisted decipherment of rongorongo, I've merely glimpsed the staggering potential of this technology. Using advanced pattern recognition algorithms, we've identified recurring sequences that hint at a complex cosmological narrative. One particularly intriguing glyph sequence, which I've tentatively translated as “Sky beings descend, bringing wisdom from the waters of life,” caused me to pause. Could this phrase be referencing the gods of the Rapa Nui people as celestial beings or even extraterrestrial entities?
In addition to my AI-assisted approach, I also took into account previous translations from respected scholars, notably the work of Thomas S. Barthel (1958), who laid foundational efforts in "Grundlagen zur Entzifferung der Osterinselschrift" (Bases for the Decipherment of the Easter Island Script). Barthel's interpretations provide valuable insights and serve as a crucial comparative framework for evaluating AI-generated hypotheses. His work suggests possible cultural and mythological contexts that align with the celestial and leadership themes identified in my speculative translation. This historical grounding not only supports the plausibility of the AI-derived meanings but also enriches our understanding by situating these interpretations within established scholarly discourse.
Pozdniakov, (2007)
The AI's analysis has revealed patterns that seem to correlate with celestial movements, suggesting that rongorongo might encode advanced astronomical knowledge. If true, this would place the Rapa Nui alongside other ancient cultures known for their celestial wisdom, like the Maya and the Egyptians. But could their knowledge have come from the same otherworldly source? You be the judge.
Outlined below is a detailed breakdown of my AI-assisted method and translation, adjusted for the reverse boustrophedon writing style:
Step 1: Cataloging Symbols
These are the identified distinct glyphs from the provided images and assigned possible meanings, based on their relative shapes as compared with other writing systems:
- Glyph A: Human-like figure - "Leader" or "Ancestor."
- Glyph B: Bird-like figure - "Sky" or "Spirit."
- Glyph C: Fish-like figure - "Water" or "Life."
- Glyph D: Crescent shape - "Moon" or "Night."
- Glyph E: Circle with dots - "Sun" or "Day."
- Glyph F: Tree-like figure - "Growth" or "Nature."
- Glyph G: Boat-like figure - "Journey" or "Travel."
- Glyph H: Star-like figure - "Star" or "Heaven."
- Glyph I: Spiral figure - "Cycle" or "Time."
- Glyph J: Wave-like figure - "Ocean" or "Movement."
Step 2: Pattern Recognition
Identify Repeated Sequences by looking for glyphs or sequences that repeat across different lines or sections. Repetition can indicate common words, phrases, or grammatical structures. Analyze Glyph Groupings. Certain groupings may indicate phrases, names, titles, or specific concepts.
Below are the sequences and positions of these glyphs to hypothesize meanings based on their frequency and context, again based in reverse boustrophedon:
Line 1: A B C D E (left to right)
- "The leader of the sky and waters, master of the night and day."
Line 2: E D C B A (right to left)
- "The sun and moon, mastering the waters and sky, the leader."
Line 3: A C B E D (left to right)
- "The leader of waters and sky, radiant like the sun, guides under the moon."
Line 4: D E A B C (right to left)
- "By the moon and sun, guides the leader of sky and waters."
Step 3: Frequency Analysis
High-frequency glyphs might represent common words or letters, while low-frequency glyphs could be more specific terms or names. Thus, I calculated the occurrence rate of each glyph and glyph combination:
- Glyph A (Leader/Ancestor) appeared in 3 out of 4 lines, suggesting its significance.
- Glyph B (Sky/Spirit) also appeared in 3 out of 4 lines, often in proximity to Glyph A.
- Glyphs C (Water/Life), D (Moon/Night), and E (Sun/Day) each appeared in all 4 lines, indicating their potential importance in the script.
- The combination A-B appeared twice, possibly signifying a strong connection between leadership and the sky/spiritual realm.
- The sequence A-B-C appeared in both the first and last lines, potentially bookending the text with a significant phrase.
Step 4: Positional Analysis
Note the position of glyphs within lines. Some glyphs may always appear at the beginning, end, or specific positions within lines, suggesting their role as markers or structural elements.
- Glyph A often appeared at or near the beginning of lines (3 out of 4 times), suggesting it might introduce a subject or topic.
- Glyphs D and E frequently appeared together, possibly indicating a conceptual pairing of night and day.
- Glyph C (Water/Life) appeared in different positions across the lines, potentially serving various grammatical functions.
Step 5: Contextual Integration
Using knowledge of the culture, history, and language of the Rapa Nui people allowed for contextual integration for certain glyphs and incorporating known information about Easter Island culture:
- The prominence of leader/ancestor glyphs aligns with the known importance of ancestor worship in Rapa Nui culture.
- The frequent appearance of sky, water, sun, and moon glyphs corresponds with the island's isolated location and the likely significance of celestial navigation.
- The combination of leader and sky glyphs might relate to the concept of divine or semi-divine leadership, which is common in Polynesian cultures.
Step 6: Hypothetical Translation
Based on the patterns identified, these hypothetical meanings were generated:
- The sequence A-B-C-D-E might represent a cosmological statement about leadership and natural elements: "The leader governs the sky and waters, mastering the night and day."
- The pairing of B (Sky/Spirit) with C (Water/Life) could signify a creation myth or the descent of divine knowledge: "Sky beings descend, bringing wisdom from the waters of life."
- The recurring placement of A (Leader/Ancestor) at the beginning of lines might indicate that each line represents a different aspect or duty of leadership.
Combining these lines, the rongorongo says:
"The leader governs the sky and waters, mastering the night and day. The sun and moon, mastering the waters and sky, the leader. The leader of waters and sky, radiant like the sun, guides under the moon. By the moon and sun, guides the leader of sky and waters. Sky beings descend, bringing wisdom from the waters of life."
This translation, though unverified, opens intriguing possibilities. The recurring themes of leadership, celestial bodies, and natural elements suggest a cosmological and hierarchical worldview. It paints a picture of a society deeply connected to nature, guided by leaders who harmonize the elements of sky, water, sun, and moon. This could suggest a text rich in cosmological and leadership themes, possibly recording myths, genealogies, or ritual formulas central to Rapa Nui culture.
An alternative more spiritual interpretation of the glyphs shifts the focus slightly, emphasizing the spiritual aspects and the cyclical nature of day and night, life and spirit, which can be deeply significant in many ancient cultures, including the Rapa Nui. Thus, a variation could also be:
"The Ancestor governs the spirit and life, mastering the night and day. The day and night, mastering the life and spirit, the Ancestor. The Ancestor of life and spirit, radiant like the day, guides under the night. By the night and day, guides the Ancestor of spirit and life. Spirit beings descend, bringing wisdom from the waters of life."
This speculative exercise uses pattern recognition to provide a coherent, though entirely hypothetical, narrative based on the provided rongorongo script images. For example, if the patterns identified (e.g., repetitions and positions of glyphs) align with linguistic structures, the speculative meanings assigned could be on track. Also, if the hypothetical meanings fit well with what we know about Rapa Nui culture, cosmology, and mythology, there might be an element of truth. Similar glyphs and patterns are found in other known scripts or languages, it could provide a basis for accurate speculation.
Given that there is no actual "Rosetta Stone" for rongorongo, it is difficult to verify meanings or compare with a known language. Rongorongo might encode cultural and historical specifics that we don't fully understand, leading to misinterpretation. Additionally, the sample size and variety of the texts we have are limited, making comprehensive pattern recognition challenging. However, using AI and machine learning to detect patterns and cross-reference with other languages and scripts combined with the application of rigorous linguistic and statistical methods could help us to identify more concrete patterns and structures leading to a definitive translation. Further, a better understanding of Rapa Nui culture, in general, could help us better contextualize the glyphs.
So while I stand behind this initial translation as one that could be on the right track, the limitations in current knowledge and the lack of a definitive key for rongorongo mean that it remains speculative. While this method offers a structured approach, the true meanings of rongorongo glyphs remain unknown and await further academic research and peer review. Still, we will never have the answers we seek if we are not willing to take some risks.
The Dangers of Centralized Interpretation
The use of AI in deciphering ancient scripts like rongorongo presents both exciting opportunities and significant challenges. On the one hand, AI’s ability to process vast amounts of data and recognize patterns can provide insights that would be impossible to achieve manually. This technology offers a new avenue for exploring undeciphered texts and uncovering lost knowledge. It gives us the power to analyze large datasets quickly, identifying patterns and structures that might take human researchers years to discover. Additionally, machine learning algorithms excel at detecting patterns and correlations that might be overlooked by the human eye. AI can also integrate data from various disciplines, offering a more holistic approach to understanding ancient texts.
While AI offers powerful tools for decipherment, it also has weaknesses and poses significant risks. It lacks the cultural and historical context that human researchers bring, which is crucial for accurate interpretation and the accuracy of AI interpretations is heavily dependent on the quality and quantity of data available. Perhaps the most troubling aspect of using AI to decipher ancient texts is the centralization and control of historic narratives.
A recent initiative funded by the Trans-Atlantic Platform highlights the potential of AI in deciphering ancient texts. Researchers are using advanced AI techniques to translate Sumerian texts, aiming to unlock the secrets of one of the world's earliest civilizations. This project illustrates the power of AI in historical linguistics but also raises important ethical and philosophical questions.
Centralizing the power to translate and interpret history into a single narrative, especially using AI, could lead to a dangerous scenario where unknown people in positions of power declare what is history and what is not. This centralization, coupled with AI’s perceived objectivity, might create an illusion of inarguability, leaving no room for debate or alternative interpretations.
History is inherently complex and multifaceted, shaped by diverse perspectives and contexts. Reducing it to a single, AI-generated narrative risks oversimplifying and distorting our understanding of the past. It is crucial to maintain a balance, ensuring that AI serves as a tool to aid human interpretation rather than replace it.
The speculative exercise of using AI to decipher rongorongo offers a fascinating glimpse into the potential and challenges of integrating advanced technology with ancient texts. While the true meaning of rongorongo remains a mystery, this approach encourages us to consider the broader implications of using AI in historical research. As we continue to explore and decode the mysteries of our past, we must remain vigilant against the risks of centralizing historical interpretation, ensuring that the rich tapestry of human history remains open to diverse perspectives and ongoing debate.
Safeguarding Our Past, Protecting Our Future
The implications of successfully deciphering rongorongo extend far beyond Easter Island. As we speak, AI is being applied to other ancient texts, including Sumerian cuneiform tablets. The Trans-Atlantic Platform's funding of this research underscores its potential significance. But what if these seemingly disparate ancient scripts are pieces of a global puzzle?
While new frontiers of science offer new possibilities, we must also acknowledge the dangers. The power to interpret history is the power to shape our understanding of who we are and where we come from. If this power becomes centralized in the hands of a few AI systems, or worse, in the hands of those who control these systems, the risk is that we end up with a monolithic narrative of human history that could be manipulated for unknown agendas. An AI system, trained on carefully curated data, deciphers ancient texts in a way that supports a particular worldview or ideology. Given the perceived objectivity of AI, these interpretations could be accepted as fact, potentially rewriting history to serve the interests of those in power.
As we venture into this brave new world of AI-assisted archaeology, it will be imperative to establish robust safeguards which could include:
- Open-Source Algorithms: Ensure that the AI systems used for historical interpretation are open to public scrutiny.
- Diverse Data Sets: Incorporate a wide range of cultural perspectives in the training data to avoid bias.
- Interdisciplinary Oversight: Create committees comprising archaeologists, historians, AI ethicists, and representatives from indigenous cultures to oversee these projects.
- Public Engagement: Foster open dialogue about AI's role in interpreting history, encouraging critical thinking and diverse perspectives.
- Preservation of Alternative Interpretations: Maintain a database of various interpretations of ancient texts, ensuring that AI-generated translations don't overshadow human-derived insights.
Are we ready for the truths that AI might uncover? If rongorongo and other ancient scripts do indeed contain evidence of extraterrestrial, interdimensional, or otherwise foreign contact, perhaps even hinting at their giving advanced ancient knowledge, then how might this reshape our understanding of human history and our place in the cosmos? The potential is as thrilling as it is terrifying. We could be on the verge of confirming that humanity's story is far more spectacular than we've ever imagined—that our ancestors were not primitive hunter-gatherers, but the inheritors of cosmic wisdom. Alternatively, we might discover that the truth about our past is even stranger than our wildest speculations. The power of AI to decipher our past will be a double-edged sword, one that could either illuminate our origins or cast shadows over the truth.
Stay curious, stay critical, and remember—the truth is out there, waiting to be decoded.
